From Crafting to Comfort

How do you convert a busy sewing room into a cozy guest room in five minutes? With a disappearing bed, of course! Our client's beloved quilting room was required to become a guest room a few times per year, and having to move around furniture was disruptive to her projects, time consuming, and labor heavy. With the addition of a murphy bed to this 10' by 12' room, our client's project space nearly doubled; and with a collapsible table, and a pull on the cabinet doors, this craft room is transformed into a guest room within minutes!
We created a balanced and clean look by centering the queen-sized bed cabinet and added recessed bookshelves on either side for additional storage. This created access to both sides of the bed and allowed for their existing closet door to open even when the bed is down. The bookshelves also provided our client with more storage for her craft supplies while keeping it concealed when guests are over.

Some special features on this build:
Overhead lights inside the bed cabinet
for reading or softer night lights.
A hinged shelf on the headboard to place glasses, phones, watches, etc. within
arm's reach of the bed.
Adjustable light switch and outlet panel
inside the bed cabinet for easy access
and control.

This build was constructed from maple plywood and poplar hardwood and designed with beautiful shaker-style paneling; all finished in a crisp and durable white. This built-in murphy bed system brought forth the best of both worlds for our client: a larger project space and an easily arranged guest room. A simple addition to this spare room created a new dual-function space that can be utilized for generations to come.
